It’s been a busy October for us here at Sligo Sudbury School as everyone has now settled into their schedules and are deep into their projects. Some of the highlights this month:

Open Day – we hosted a well-attended Open Day with school tours given by current students, and alumni, parents, and staff available to answer further questions. Attendees were very impressed by the confidence and ability of our student ambassadors.

Ready Steady Cook! – This exciting alternative to cooking club has become very popular already. Teams of three attempt to make a meal in 20 minutes using “surprise” ingredients which are revealed in the moment, and staples from the food cupboard.

Halloween Party – Our fabulous Halloween Party was planned and managed almost entirely by students. Party planners Katie, Maddie, Ellah, and Farah organised and made decorations, the older music band took on more roles in managing the concert including set times, sound check, and making a stage. Haunted rooms populated by ghosts, ghouls, witches and oija boards terrified the life out of unsuspecting parents and guests, and an improvised escape room provided a challenge for the more courageous. We are grateful to our generous volunteer Jess who came in to help with pattern drafting for costume making and Halloween decorations.
Musical talent was not in short supply. The variety and polish of the performances get better and better each year. The Bugs performed for the first time ever in front of a live audience, while the more seasoned Empty Vessels and Majestic Frogs brought the house down, each with their own original songs. Arianna shared her extraordinary voice with us, singing one of her own compositions, while Full Moon gave a powerful performance of Mamma Mia.

Market Day – Coinciding with Halloween Party, this term’s Market Day was awash with ghoulish goodies and sticky tricks. Themed cakes and cookies, marshmallow eyeballs, spicy sandwiches, and candy floss competed for space with lucky dips, handmade greetings cards, and bric a brac of all kinds. Huge thanks also to parents Vincent and Áine for the best coffee and tea, and their fundraising efforts in support of the new build.
